City of Athens Fire Department Awarded Grant from Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation® to Enhance Emergency Response

This Grant is part of more than $107 million awarded by the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation® to support public safety across the U.S.

(Athens, Tennessee) — April 29, 2026 — As first responders continue to serve the Athens community, having the proper tools to respond effectively during emergencies remains essential. Recognizing this need, the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation® recently awarded the City of Athens Fire Department a $39,313 grant to purchase a Hurst Spreader, Cutter, Ram, and accessories.

These new extrication tools will greatly enhance our ability to respond to vehicle accidents and other rescue situations quickly and safely. They allow firefighters to cut, spread, and remove debris with precision, reducing the time it takes to reach trapped victims. This not only improves survival outcomes but also helps protect responders from unnecessary risk during complex rescues.

Fire Chief, Brandon Ainsworth stated, “We are extremely grateful to the Firehouse Subs® Public Safety Foundation and our local Firehouse Subs® restaurant in Athens, Tennessee for this vital support .  Having reliable, up-to-date equipment enhances our ability to protect lives and better serve our community.”

For more than 20 years, charitable donations have powered the Firehouse Subs® Public Safety Foundation’s mission to support first responders and public safety organizations nationwide.  Since 2005, the Foundation has awarded more than 7,200 grants totaling over $107 million to public safety organizations.

  1. The specific mention of reducing time to reach trapped victims really highlights the real-world impact of these new extrication tools—seconds matter so much in those first critical moments. Having seen a similar rescue effort in our own community, it’s clear how game-changing precise equipment can be for both victims and firefighters.

  2. Having up-to-date extrication gear like the Hurst tools truly makes a difference in those critical seconds after a crash. It’s encouraging to see a foundation focused on equipping small departments that might otherwise struggle with budget constraints. This kind of support directly impacts survival rates in rural communities.

  3. The $39,313 grant for new Hurst tools is exactly the kind of targeted support that makes a real difference at crash scenes. Having watched extrications in a neighboring town with outdated gear, knowing responders can now cut and spread with precision means precious minutes saved for trapped victims. That’s funding well spent.

  4. The new Hurst extrication tools sound like a game-changer for cutting down rescue times — that precision in removing debris can make all the difference when every second counts. Having seen a similar tool in action during a local training, the difference between older hydraulic gear and these newer models is truly night and day for both victim safety and firefighter strain.
