Athens City Council Approves Intersection Improvements at Rocky Mount Road/ W. Madison Avenue/Old Riceville Road 

The Athens City Council, during their December 16, 2025 meeting, approved road improvements at the intersection of Rocky Mount Road/W. Madison Avenue/Old Riceville Road to enhance traffic safety. The intersection improvements will consist of installing a new traffic light at W. Madison Avenue and Old Riceville Road which will be interconnected with the railroad crossing warning equipment to improve traffic flow and safety. This project was competitively bid out and the low bidder, Stansell Electric, will install the improvements at a cost of $430,000. This project is being funded entirely by a state grant and is scheduled to be completed during Summer 2026. For more information, contact the Athens Public Works Department at 423-744-2745.
