The City of Athens, TN and its Finance Department headed by Mike Keith have been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for its annual comprehensive financial report for fiscal year ending June 30, 2024. This marks the 33rd consecutive year the City of Athens has received this distinguished honor.
The Certificate of Achievement represents the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting. To receive this award, the City must produce a report that is easily readable, efficiently organized, and satisfies many requirements, standards, and principles. The City’s report was reviewed by an impartial panel of judges that included individuals with experience in public sector accounting such as auditors, accountants, and other finance professionals. Out of 345 municipalities in Tennessee, Athens is among only 30 to earn this prestigious recognition.
