The Athens City Council announces the resignation of Dr. Dick Pelley, who has continuously served on the Athens City Council since 2002. During his 23 years of service, Dr. Pelley has been a dedicated advocate for the Athens community and has played an active role on numerous boards, committees, and civic initiatives that have shaped the city’s progress. His service has been marked by community-minded decision making and a steadfast commitment to the citizens of Athens.

Dr. Pelley’s resignation took effect upon adjournment of the special called session on October 23, 2025. In accordance with the City Charter and applicable state laws, the Athens City Council will appoint a qualified individual to fill the vacancy for the remainder of the unexpired term, which ends November 2026.

The Athens City Council expresses its sincere gratitude to Dr. Pelley for his years of public service and dedication to the City of Athens, Tennessee.
