Big changes are coming to Heritage Park, funded through a combination of City of Athens Capital Improvement Funds and an LPRF grant, promising to make it an even better place for families to gather, play, and enjoy the outdoors. The improvement project will bring a brand-new walking trail, a completely revamped baseball field, a shiny new playground, pedestrian lighting, and long-awaited ADA accessibility upgrades.

After reviewing proposals, the city tapped Bluegrass Recreation Sales & Installation to supply top-quality amenities, including playground equipment, benches, bike racks, a water fountain, and even a pre-built scorer’s shelter for the ballfield. Wilson Construction Group came in as the lowest bidder for the construction work at just under $1.49 million, beating out two other firms.

City staff are working closely with architects and, once the contractor is on board, will look for practical ways to keep costs manageable while maintaining quality and meeting grant requirements.
With City Council’s approval now secured for the purchases and contract awards, the Heritage Park makeover — totaling about $1.73 million and covering construction, site amenities, engineering oversight, safety testing, and extra parking lot paving — is officially moving forward. The project is expected to be completed in early 2026, bringing Athens a more beautiful, accessible, and family-friendly park, built with plenty of hometown pride.
