Youth Sports Camps
The City of Athens Parks and Recreation has partnered with Tennessee Wesleyan University to offer free youth sports camps for our local youth.
Baseball – The TWU men’s baseball team covers defensive drills, catching, pitching and hitting with boys ages 4-13. These camps are usually held in September on the Athens Regional Park baseball/softball fields. Players are asked to bring their own bats and gloves, if possible. Many of these college athletes got their start through recreational opportunities just like this, and are happy to share their love of the game with a new generation of players.
Basketball – The TWU men’s basketball team teaches boys and girls, ages 4-13, the fundamentals and drills to help develop their game. These camps are usually held in October at the James L. Robb Gymnasium at Tennessee Wesleyan University. The TWU basketball players are always interactive with the children and the kids really learn so many skills that they carry over to our basketball season.
Softball – The TWU women’s softball team covers defensive drills, catching, pitching and hitting with girls ages 4-13. These camps are usually held in September on the Athens Regional Park baseball/softball fields. Players are asked to bring their own bats and gloves, if possible. Tennessee Wesleyan University’s softball team. They are such an energetic team and all our participants leave the camp with an experience they will always remember.
Tennis – The TWU tennis team works with boys and girls, ages 5-12, with beginner-level experience, to enhance their skills and continue their development as players. These camps are usually held in October at the Ingleside Tennis Complex. Participants are asked to bring their own tennis racquets. This is a great way for children who have been introduced to tennis to further hone their skills and strengthen their appreciation of the game.
While there is no fee for these wonderful programs, players must be pre-registered. As soon as the dates are set for the camps, we will list them with a link to register your child.
USTA Rally Cats Beginners Tennis
The City of Athens Parks and Recreation Department has partnered with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and Tennessee Wesleyan University tennis teams to host its popular USTA Rally Cats Beginners Tennis Program for ages 4 to 10. The four-week program is usually held in the Spring and Fall, one night per week, at the Ingleside Tennis Complex.
Rally Cats was developed by USTA to provide a fun introduction of tennis for kids and keep them on the court for years to come. Rally Cats use smaller rackets, lower nets, and modified balls, which leads to less frustration and more fun.
