Parks and Recreation

The Parks & Recreation Department provides the citizens of Athens with quality-of-life amenities and events. This Department consists of four divisions: Administration, Maintenance, Pool, and Programming.

The Administration Division:

Oversees the operations and maintenance of 12 city parks and the Southeast Tennessee Trade & Conference Center
Supervises recreational sports programs including little league, T-ball, youth basketball, beginners’ tennis, youth sports camps (baseball, basketball, softball, and tennis), and adult co-ed softball
Supervises annual events such as the daddy-daughter dance, mother-son dance, fishing derby, soapbox derby, Easter Egg Hunt, Arbor Day Program, swim lessons, and various holiday events
Oversees the private contractor that maintains the downtown landscaping
Provides staff support to the seven-member Recreation Advisory Board

The Maintenance Division:

Maintains the 12 city parks and their amenities
Prepares ball fields for games and tournaments
Sets up/clean up the Conference Center when rented
Assists with events and tournaments

The Pool Division:

Operates the outdoor swimming pool at Ingleside Park including staffing the pool with certified lifeguards during the swimming season

The Programming Division:
