Parks and Recreation

The Parks & Recreation Department provides the citizens of Athens with quality-of-life amenities and events. This Department consists of four divisions: Administration, Maintenance, Pool, and Programming.

The Administration Division:

  • Oversees the operations and maintenance of 12 city parks and the Southeast Tennessee Trade & Conference Center
  • Supervises recreational sports programs including little league, T-ball, youth basketball, beginners’ tennis, youth sports camps (baseball, basketball, softball, and tennis), and adult co-ed softball
  • Supervises annual events such as the daddy-daughter dance, mother-son dance, fishing derby, soapbox derby, Easter Egg Hunt, Arbor Day Program, swim lessons, and various holiday events
  • Oversees the private contractor that maintains the downtown landscaping
  • Provides staff support to the seven-member Recreation Advisory Board

The Maintenance Division:

  • Maintains the 12 city parks and their amenities
  • Prepares ball fields for games and tournaments
  • Sets up/clean up the Conference Center when rented
  • Assists with events and tournaments

The Pool Division:

  • Operates the outdoor swimming pool at Ingleside Park including staffing the pool with certified lifeguards during the swimming season

The Programming Division:

  • Organizes and conducts recreational sports programs including little league, T-ball, youth basketball, beginners’ tennis, youth sports camps (baseball, basketball, softball, and tennis), and adult co-ed softball
