Perhaps the most requested facility in downtown Athens will finally be a reality thanks to a cooperate effort of the city, county, state and private funds. For many years citizens have requested a restroom facility for downtown Athens particularly the loyal Veterans Park walkers. Due to construction regulations at Veterans a permanent building was not feasible however, with the acquisition by the city of Market Park (the Athens Supply property) what has been long requested will be finally built. The two parcels will be joined with a pedestrian crossing and eventually the walking paths will be one. Users of each park will have easy access to clean, accessible restrooms. Phase Two of the Market Park Development was funded with $150,000 from the state Local Parks and Recreation Fund, $30,000 from the McMinn County Hotel Motel tax fund, $15,000 in private funds from the Athens Parks Foundation with the balance paid by the city of Athens of $188,583 for a total of $383,583. What this means for the citizens of Athens is that phase two of this development is being built for less than fifty cents of the Athens dollar. During our public meetings the citizens requested that the building keep the same architecture of the first pavilion. As you can see by the renderings the architect has done this beautifully. Also since the building is in the flood plain FEMA and building codes required it to be elevated approximately five foot. An ADA ramping system was designed into the building to allow wheelchair access and access for those who have trouble with steps. The Southwest side of the building was designed as the beginning point of downtown tours, such as the quilt trail, as residents and tourists will be able to pick up literature and begin either a guided or self-guided tour. With approximately 1,700 square feet under roof this building will become the anchor location for downtown festivals and for the Farmers Market. The building has a scheduled completion date of October 2012. - "Parks and Recreation Director Austin Fesmire"
